Sabbatical Positions

Sabbatical roles are paid positions within the Union Society, as a sabbatical officer you will work full time in the union.

President: Responsible for representing the Union Society to the University, the local community and the national media, the president is the sabbatical officer who draws together the work of the other 5. You will be responsible for the image of the Union Society.

Activities Officer: The activities officer is, surprisingly, responsible for student activities within the union! From societies to the graduation ball you'll be the one who makes sure opportunities are available for students to get involved.

Education Officer: The education officer is the student representative on all educational issues. They ensure that students are getting a quality education and that their problems and opinions are being listened to. The education officer also trains all student representatives from officers to student staff committee reps.

Student Support Officer: The student support officer is responsible for the welfare of the students of Newcastle University; you'll be running campaigns both on campus to help students and in the local community to raise awareness of student issues.

Athletic Union President: The President of the Athletic Union is usually one of the most eagerly contested election battles in the union, with responsibility for Newcastle's 55+ sports clubs, including representation to BUSA, you'll be the head of one of the best University sport organisations in the country...
 
Editor of the Courier: The Editor of The Courier is responsible for producing the Union Society's very own high-quality weekly. You'll manage a team of volunteer writers and editors, lay up the paper and work with other local media on stories.  

 

Part Time Offcer Positions

 

Executive Officer Positions

Executive officers sit on executive committee, the Union Society's day to day decision making group. These officers are elected to represent a certain group to the Union Society.
 
Campaigns Officer: As campaigns officer you would work closely with the VP Student Support to run wide reaching effective campaigns on issues facing Newcastle students. These vary from national issues such as sexual health awareness to more local issues such as the price of metro tickets!!

Ethics and Environment Officer: In this position you address the increasingly important issues of the environment and ethics. Your role is to increase awareness of these issues across the campus through campaigns and work with the union and the university to address them.

Gender Equality Officer: In this role you represent the interests of all genders and raise awareness of issues surrounding gender discrimination (ideally a job share between a male and a female)

International Students Officer: In this role you represent all international students at Newcastle. There are increasing numbers of international students at Newcastle University, as their representative you can address issues which affect these students and help improve their experience here.

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) Officer: In this role you represent all LGBT students at Newcastle, ensuring that their voice is heard and any issues faced by them are acted upon. As a member of the Union's diversity committee you will be involved in gathering opinion and furthering the Union Society's inclusion of all of its members.

Racial Equality Officer: In this role you promote anti-racism/racial equality around the university. By running campaigns and working with union and university staff you can tackle really important issues which affect hundreds of Newcastle students every year.
Students with Disabilities Officer: The students' with disabilities officer is responsible for ensuring the fair and equal representation of all students regardless of disability. As a member of the Union's diversity committee you will be involved in gathering opinion and furthering the Union Society's inclusion of all of its members.

Non-Executive Officer Positions

These officers do not sit on executive committee and usually have specific roles to do with events in the Union.
 
Chair of Union Council: Be an integral part most important part of the union...its council. You will chair this monthly meeting and be there to ensure order, healthy debate and respect!

Convenor of Disciplinary Committee: You'll be in charge of the Union Society's disciplinary committee and convene panels to hear cases, usually student misdemeanours on Union Society property. You will act as mediator between the Union Society prosecutor and the defendant and ensure that the panel get enough information to make a decision and select an appropriate penalty.

RAG Officer: This is an amazing opportunity to organise the union's biggest charity event....RAG week. You work with a crew of volunteers to plan a week of fun raising events; this can include street collecting, abseiling of the Tyne Bridge and selling your friends in a slave auction!

Convenor of Debates: Doing exactly what it says on the tin, as convenor of debates you will organise debating events including inter varsity and intra mural tournaments.
