Hi, I'm Anushka the Gender Equality officer this year. My job is to promote gender equality within the union and university, and help enable students to take action to gain this equality.
Equality is a very important issue, and even though many think that women and men are equal after a long struggle, this just is not the case. I think it is crucial to stop this belief, and continue to raise awareness amongst the student body that there are relevant issues in our society concerning gender equality.
This year, there will be many more campaigns and activities promoting empowerment of women, what with International Women's Day, and the new women's society. Women still need more opportunities and power in all aspects of our society, especially in the workplace, where there is still discrimination against women in certain jobs. However, there are many issues that involve men as well as women, in order to bring about equality in genders. This includes more facilities for fathers, and more awareness of the changing role of men in modern society.
If you have any problems concerning gender equality issues, or feel discriminated because of you sex, at work or uni, please email me at gender.union@ncl.ac.uk or get advice from the Student Advice Centre, on the first floor of the union.
Feel free to get in touch if there are any issues you would like to discuss, or campaigns you would like to run!
Anushka
