As Ethics and Environment (E&E) officers, we help maintain the University's fair-trade status and improve the energy and sustainability policies in the Union and University.

We sit on Union council, Executive committee and Energy & Sustainability Committee (ESC). We also founded the E&E sub-committee which enables more students to get involved and have a say in the campaigns we head; and E&E forum which brings alike societies together to enable collaborative action for joint campaigns.

We are working on lots of things but here a few main campaigns for our time in office in 2007/08.

1. Campaign Against Genocide ~ with main focus on the Darfur crisis, Rwandan genocide and the recent events in Burma, we are working with several societies to raise awareness and interest in helping genocide survivors and getting people active for this cause. This global campaign is lead by Katie.

2. Green Landlords Scheme ~ this campaign is linked with a Union-wide aim to improve student-community relations in Newcastle. A policy is currently being written by the ESC to ensure student housing from the University's approved landlords sector are energy and water efficient. This will save you money and help the environment. This campaign is lead by Jen.

3. E&E of the Union Society and University ~ this campaign aims to improve the quantity and availability of fair-trade, organic and local produce in the Union shop, bars and food outlets and in other buildings around campus. Also it aims to improve the general energy and waste policies including recycling facilities and energy usage around the uni and in halls. This campaign is lead by Jen.

4. E&E Week ~ this is a massive annual event which took off last year. Katie was last year's project leader for this week of fundraising, stalls, games, talks, lectures and loads of opportunities to get more involved! This year Will Richens, Alexandra Henderson & Rachel Hosey (Campaigns Officer) will be organising it - keep your eyes open during Fair-trade fortnight in February 2008!

If you'd like to get in contact to suggest stuff you'd like to see change, would like advice, or just want to get more involved in what we do then please email us at environment.union@ncl.ac.uk.

Cheers!

Jen and Katie
