In 2008 the Union Society installed a 10 strong PC Cluster with printing. The PC Clusters are provided to support the academic activity of any member of Newcastle University. This is situated on the second floor next to the Global Cafe.
We can also provide IT equipment hire and information on the campus wireless network.
The Union Society has IT equipment and services available for commercial and society use on the premises. The equipment and services available include:

Society Rates (minimum 4 hours):
Only loaned out to ratified society committee members with a valid smart card that must be left as a deposit.
Proof of society membership must be obtained via the activities office.
Societies must also be able to show that they have £200 in their account before borrowing. A signature must also be obtained from a member of staff to confirm this.
Socities failing to return the equipment to reception on time after use will be charged at the full commercial rate. Funds will be debited directly from Society accounts.

To book the laptop you need to return a completed, printed and signed form to reception in good time, preferably at least 24 hours before you wish to use the equipment.
Please note:
Equipment is loaned out directly from reception. Equipment must not leave Union Society premises without explicit authorisation from Union IT. Failure to return equipment directly to reception will incur charges at the full rate until it is returned. Costs incurred from loss or damage of equipment will be charged in full.

Student areas in the Union Society where you see our "No Wires" posters are covered by the University Wireless network system known as "Magpie". This means that you can sit in one of our Bars and Cafes and work/surf while you eat and drink!
If you have a laptop with Wireless access then you can connect to the service, however there are a few things you need to do first.

The Old Robinson Library Building have ISS computing staff that can help you access the wireless networks with your machines if you are having difficulty.
